Chiquita Evans was the first woman to be selected for the NBA 2K Esports League. She is setting the example for other women.

Esports are commonly described as League of Legends or Counter-Strike by the majority of gamers. There are many leagues that are similar to traditional sports. Both NFL and NBA offer their own esports leagues , based off of their respective sports, however the NBA’s is far closer to the real world league.
In February 2017In February of 2017, the NBA 2K League was created by 2K Games and the National Basketball Association. The league is about to end the second season of the league, it has 21 teams that compete with real NBA teams. As with traditional basketball, every team is comprised of five players who are in charge of at least one spot on a court that is digital.
Like many gaming teams, are mostly male. Since the beginning of the league, every single player was chosen as male. In 2018, however, a woman was selected to join the Golden State Warriors Gaming Squad. That woman was Chiquita Evans, also known as “chiquitae126” on the internet.
Contrary to the majority of players in the league, Chiquita actually got her starting in basketball on the court. Chiquita was a high-school basketball star from Louisville, Kentucky and was almost ready to be an elite player at Kentucky State University. Her career was over prior to it beginning after she sustained a knee injury.
In the end, rather than give up, she refocused her efforts in a different direction. While before, she would rise early to train on a real court now she’d wake up early to work on an online court. Her determination and commitment eventually led to her having a following on Twitchas well as an invitation to the second-ever NBA 2K League Draft.
Evans plays in the sixth position on the Warriors Gaming Squad. It is an alternative position for the main team in case of an illness. Since games are less strenuous than regular basketballwhich means Evans seldom gets to play any game. But, the contributions she makes when she does play are considerable and her fans always cheer her on. As a backup, she isn’t considered to be a financial loss, since she is paid at the same rate as other players.
Chiquita has other avenues to showcase her talent. Evans was the first athlete to appear in a New York showcase game with 33 points.
Getting to where she is today required a lot of courage. There’s still a lot of sexism in gaming that Evans needed to overcome to get to where she is today and still far more prior to the NBA 2K League is even near to attaining gender equality. Evans is an excellent start.
